Invented in 1926, “Catalin” is cast “phenol-formaldehyde resin” made by combining phenol (Carbolic Acid) and formaldehyde (a carcinogen) and while it may have looked beautiful when it was 1st used, it is chemically unstable, shrinks and cracks over time becoming very brittle. Pipers now have to deal with serious health threats from the dust that results from this material degrading as it ages. The modern artificial ivory we use to replace it is made from 2-part polyester and epoxy resins with an integrated grain material which is non-toxic, takes a polish and provides long-lasting safety and peace of mind. We also have access to non-endangered species of real Ivory such as Mammoth tusk – Take note however that we do not stock Mammoth or other noon endangered Ivory types and this requires a special order.
